it's pouring out,
i don't seem to remember it raining so much in toronto-
i must have brought it back with me to serve as a constant reminder of the love/hate relationship i shared with the weather in amsterdam.
over the weekend i was out with the exchangies partying at the bata shoe museum
slightly pricey but very very very fun.
the music line-up was amazing- tlc, britney spears, notorious b.i.g, fedde le grand.
stuff i like to dance to.
what happened after was pretty much a blur,
all i know is that getting up for work the next day was very difficult and painful.
the even bigger downside- i had to miss the santa claus parade.
that really disappointed me. i had to whine about it the whole shift at work.
just the other week, i was sitting at starbucks attempting to read on a rainy gloomy day
standing next to me was the resident homeless guy drinking his hot coffee.
he's sweet, he sits at the corner of my street and sometimes he hides out at starbucks.
he never causes trouble and he's friendly.
and in comes a family of 3- a suave and important-looking dad and his 2 girls.
the girls, about 8 years old, were deciding on what to drink.
girl one says she wants a cappucino. then looks at my frappucino and loudly expresses a change of heart.
she wants a frapp.
girl two, dismayed at this horrid choice of beverage exclaims that it's freezing out,
PLUS the frappucino is "so fattening. it has 300 calories in it!"
i shit you not.
that's exactly what she said.
first- who the hell orders cappucino at age 8?
second- who the hell knows how many calories there are in a damned frappucino at age 8?
third- which genius kid even knows what a calorie is at age 8?
fourth- which 8 year old kid even cares about calories in their coffee??
here i was, in the middle of a socially awkward (yet highly interesting) situation.
one one hand, a man with nothing, drinking whatever is given to him by the baristas,
on the other hand, 8 year old girls who worry about calories in their expensive coffees,
wearing their faux animal print vests and carrying their little branded school bags.
there we were- three groups of people representing three levels of the social strata.
toronto is a very interesting city-
all you really have to do is sit at a coffee place for an afternoon and you'll discover so much.
the rich/the poor/the student/the hippie/the yuppie/the immigrant/the local...
walking home from school, i'd notice how in one block there were chinese, ethiopian, japanese, greek, persian, latin american, italian restaurants neatly placed in between a german and portuguese church.
and that's in one block.
i love this city- there are a lot of weird people (in good and bad ways)
but it's so darn eccentric, i love it.
so i say, let it rain!
i'm ready for what toronto has to offer!
p.s. happy birthday to my favourite girls-
janice and piggy!
i love you and i miss you two so much.
